Orthodontics

Orthodontics is a specialization in dental medicine that deals with the correction of dentomaxial abnormalities. Orthodontics is the specialty that deals with the alignment of the teeth position, the regulation of the occlusion (bite) and the reports between the two jaws.

Orthodontic devices are the means by which this is done.

The orthodontic devices are of several types (fixed or mobile, visible or invisible) and are recommended by the orthodontist for each individualized case.

They act to realign teeth, re-incense the muscles, and influence the growth of jaws. Orthodontic appliances work by exerting a slight pressure on the teeth and jaws. Depending on the severity of the problem, the dentist recommends the appropriate type of device.

There are several types of abnormalities that can be corrected orthodontically:

  • Overbite - when the upper front teeth come out far ahead of the lower ones;
  • Backbone (underbite) - the bulldog appearance, when the lower front teeth are out in front or the upper ones are retracted far behind;
  • Cross over - when the superior teeth do not fit in front of the lower ones, in a normal bite;
  • Open Tolerance - Forming a space between the occlusal surfaces of the front and / or lateral teeth when biting the posterior teeth;
  • Medial line malocclusion - when the center of the upper front teeth does not align with the center of the lower front teeth;
  • Distal teeth - interdental spaces or "edentuous bumps" resulting from the absence of teeth or teeth that do not fill the entire arch;
  • Dental Insertion - When there are too many teeth to take place on the dental arch.

In addition to the unsightly appearance, crooked teeth are harder to care for, can be lost earlier due to career and periodontitis, and force masticatory muscles to an extra effort that can lead to headaches, temporomandibular joint dysfunction and pain at the level neck, shoulder and back. The advantages of orthodontic treatment include better oral health, a more pleasant appearance and greater teeth durability.

The good part is that orthodontics is no longer a branch that only addresses children. Thanks to modern techniques, teeth can be straightened at any age. There are also invisible orthodontic appliances that can be worn by people who do not want to see it. In addition to the physiognomy aspect of orthodontic treatments (sometimes changes in physiognomy are drastically improved), they also provide a dentomaxilar state of health.

The duration of an orthodontic treatment varies greatly, depending on the complexity of the problems, patient collaboration, etc. It is generally between 18 and 24 months.
